Habits of Work and Learning (HOWLs)

In most schools, student participation can artificially inflate or deflate academic grades. Good study habits, responsibility, self-advocacy, and more are critical skills for success throughout life, and are necessary to be successful at HCA. We assess and track HOWLs separately from class content mastery to help students grow all-around as learners. Ultimately, this system is both more fair and makes students more accountable. For instance, a student who misses two weeks of school for sickness won’t be penalized for missing participation points, and a student can’t pass with a “C” by skipping all the tests but turning in homework and extra credit. Our HOWLS are:

  • Preparation
  • Work Completion
  • Reflection
  • Perseverance
  • Responsibility
  • Initiative
  • Participation
  • Revision
